Review of Chaplin (1992) by Alex L — 07 Apr 2009
There's no doubt that the idea behind this movie is gushing with potential, since Chaplin's influence in the cinema can't be overstated, not to mention his interesting characteristics. But somehow when I watched this movie, there seemed to be no direction.
I tried liking this movie, but maybe since I was set up with such high hopes, that I expected alot more. Downey's performance was good, not great as it wasn't a matter of his own fault, but the production.
It seems that there wasn't enough exploration of Chaplin as the quirky and whimsical film character, as the film focused way too much on his off-screen life, which frankly was boring to watch. Those moments when Downey was playing as the character in Chaplin's film were golden, but made me wishing for more.
