Review of Chaplin (1992) by Tyler W — 05 Jun 2009
As expected, this movie was long and slowly paced, but had some very strong qualities. The story is told in linear fashion following every other biography by the book. Chaplin himself was an intriguing man, although I feel you have to be a fan of his work to enjoy this film fully.
It just wasn't that interesting. I enjoyed the integration of actual Chaplin footage with the movie, and I had a few chuckles. He definitely knew how to make people laugh. It's also nice to see his more serious side and strong political views.
Like every rise to fame story, Chaplin was a ladies man. So many beautiful women in this film grace the screen and succeed at portraying that part of Chaplin's life. I have to say my favorite part was seeing him recieve his Oscar and what he did in his later years.
Robert Downey Jr. pre-druggy was solid, but doesn't grab viewers by the balls like he does now. That being said, I still feel he did the best he could with the sometimes dry script. I wouldn't watch this again, but I recommend one viewing, especially to people who are familiar with his work.
