I couldn't tell you who won Best Actor at the Academy Awards in 1992 but I can tell you who should have. Robert Downey Jr. (He was nominated at least). This was close to a warts and all biography of The Tramp as we're likely to see and the entire cast are on the top of their game under Sir Richard Attenborough's direction (no stranger to biopics having done Ghandi with Ben Kingsley about a decade prior to this).

Beyond the madness, beneath the genius as we travel with the film through Chaplin's successes and failures we learn that he himself was an immigrant in a strange land, an underdog who often stumbled, often fell flat but always ultimately made it through okay and found humor amidst the misery.

Attenborough's triumph is the revelation the film makes in it's narrative: that the most intimate portrait of Charlie Chaplin is the body of work he left behind.
