Review of Chaplin (1992) by Judy G — 09 Sep 2011
As many times as I've seen this film, I can't ignore the incandescent performance by Robert Downey Jr, nor the disappointingly flat script. The movie is informative but not enlightening. More a Valentine to Mr.
Chaplin but it lacks a "take" on the man. The story unfolds scene by scene and we are guided by the make believe editor (Anthony Hopkins), which is not only a waste of his talent but a signal to the audience that there will be no arc to this story.
Kudos to a strong cast and especially Mr. Downey. They deserved a better script.
