Review of Chaos Theory (2008) by Hugh J — 17 Jul 2008
I think it was in one of the special features on the Clerks X DVD that someone said if you start watching 'Clerks' for the first time and you don't think it's that good and it's not living up to the hype because it's not that funny, at the very least, stay until you hear the actors say "37".
I bring that up because it was right around the 37 minute mark that I realized how much I liked this movie. Now, obviously, it's not for everyone, hence the limited release. The story isn't really anything original and there's a bunch of cliched plot points that in other movies (such as 'Hellboy') would have totally taken me out of it and rendered me unable to enjoy the movie.
Fortunately, I'm a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds. This guy is funny as fuck and with this movie, he basically solidifies the fact that he's a damn good actor as well. Now I'm a fan of Stuart Townsend, Emily Mortimer and Sarah Chalke as well but this is totally Reynolds' movie.
The dude is fucking riveting to watch. At around the 37-minute mark, there's a scene where he gets out of his car and he's literally just trying to keep himself from throwing up, and the scene just plays out like that for the duration of the song.
But I was fucking glued to the screen the entire time. See, normally I would call this movie for being too sappy and unoriginal but for some reason, due in large part to the actors involved, I was with it the whole way through.
And it's because I liked the characters so much that I'm able to overlook its flaws. Plus, I loved the ending. That shit was fucking sweet as hell. Just a great little film that I enjoyed immensely.
