Review of Changeling (2008) by Helmy G — 04 May 2014
I'm always surprised how much I actually enjoy a excellent drama. I think of myself as a fantasy and science fiction fan first and foremost, but then a quietly powerful film like this catches me off guard.
Angelina is terrific and gives a restrained but raw performance as a woman under immense pressure, but whose dignity and love for her son win out. The tale is disturbing and mesmerising and since it's a true story, don't expect any sentimental Spielberg ending here.
However, the pay off is satisfying. It's also wonderful to see a crime drama where not all lawyers and policeman are sleazebags, corrupt or condescending and that there a good people in the world too.
This makes the film feel more realistic and textured.
