Review of Chandni Chowk to China (2009) by Matthew L — 01 Jul 2009
When I vacationed in India in December of last year ('08), the hype over Akshay Kumar's comedy-action film "Chandni Chowk to China" was enormous. I was completely taken in by the cool hip-hop video for the eponymous rap-sung single by the Bollywood superstar and thought the movie would be comparably exciting, but not so.
It has its moments, mostly action and dance sequences, but is too long for my American tastes at nearly 3 hours, a standard Indian-length film. The film felt completely limp and lacking in emotional or comedic weight.
I get the hype over Akshay - he is a certified film star abroad, yet it doesn't translate with the flimsy dialogue and performances here.
