Review of Chalk (2007) by Holly H — 01 Apr 2009
I rented this one on a whim, it looked like it could be interesting. It is shot documentary-style, so I had to look twice to make sure this wasn't "real". Indeed it wasn't and was pretty dramatic to be real-life highschool, IMO.
I suspect there is a kernel of truth in this one regarding the teaching experience/perspective of some educators, but overall it makes them just look dumb, and I thought that was sad because that's simply not true.
I did find this one in the "comedy" section, so I suppose it is supposed to be funny, and parts were amusing, but mostly I was watching it knowing it wasn't real and didn't care/couldn't get into it.
It was interesting to see the growth of the one teacher who was completely new to teaching over the school year, but again, it wasn't real, so...who cares? It would've been better if it hadn't been shot as a "mockumenatry" and the characters were developed more, I think.
