Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Brian O — 13 Mar 2011
A carefully constructed and intriguing puzzle by Iranian director Abbas Kiarostama that ultimately disappoints because the more meaningful questionsâ"can love last, can we find our way back, can we begin at the beginning, etc.
â"are subsumed by the puzzle itself: does this couple actually have a history together or are they just pretending? Since we never know the answerâ"and the film is constructed in such a way that either interpretation can be discreditedâ"these larger questions donâ(TM)t ultimately matter.
And, ultimately, nor does the answer to the smaller question. Nevertheless, Certified Copy is thoroughly engrossing and beautifully acted. You just can't take your eyes of Juliette Binoche.
