Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Lucas D — 14 Jun 2011
CERTIFIED COPY is an interesting film about relationships and love. I was reminded of BEFORE SUNSET because the setting is similar. Two strangers meet and travel around a European country discussing various topics.
Except this one deals with an older couple. They discuss topics concerning marriage and how growing older changes things between a couple. The film presents a complex dilemma for the viewer. At some point the two start pretending to be married.
They have arguments; they laugh; they eat together. They do it so convincingly you aren't sure if they really are married or not. You start to doubt if they are actually pretending. Maybe they started this whole trip to save their marriage? CERTIFIED COPY is a fascinating little mystery that is intelligent; thought-provoking but also entertaining.
Sometimes their arguments are so funny you can't help but laugh. It helps that the performances are so natural and convincing. Both leads do a great job bringing out the complexities of their characters.
Binoche's character seems to be quite a tortured soul...like an emotional whirpool is going on inside of her. Binoche brings that out very well. Both compliment eachother and share great chemistry.
Because the film has little or no narrative and an ambigious ending it's important that the viewer can relate to the actor's performances and the topics they are discussing. CERTIFIED COPY does all this very well.
Surely a film I would love to revisit.
