Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Ivan L — 23 Aug 2011
Finally renting this movie after its glowing ratings whilst on the big screen in NY, I guess expectations were just beyond what was fair. and this movie is not a grandiose epic, nor a sociopolitical statement.
It is quite simply, a painting. Not a particularly interesting one at that. Set in rustic surroundings and being pretty timeless, it draws out the perennial struggle of a distant couple with individualistic ideas on what their marriage should be.
As in life, it does not offer an answer - just snippets of expectation, annoyance, gaiety and dejection. For ending on that note, it does not draw my kudos. Nonetheless, the acting is good, and the negative "karma" played out in the beginning is perhaps the most dissonant conversation-killing I've ever experienced or seen played out on screen.
