Like all of Kelly Reichartdt's films, Certain Woman is a quiet and deliberate picture (albeit with a slightly more conventional narrative structure), but its payoff is hardly excusable. Adapted from the short stories of Maile Meloy, Certain Woman reads like fine prose, with plenty of atmosphere and minimal use of music enhancing the mood.

The film attempts to make the slice-of-life sensibility transgressive, and the quartet of leads also all do a commendable job playing characters that are frankly far more pedestrian than the roles they're probably used too.

In the end, Certain Woman is an admiral portrait of modern women and small-town America, even while being evidently limited.
