Review of Centurion (2010) by Paul L — 10 Feb 2011
I am not sure why there is so much hate for this movie. It does prioritize spectacle over story, but I really appreciated the gritty realism of it. I'm tired of hearing big stars with bad accents in Roman genre flicks shout all their lines about HONOR BLAH BLAH DUTY BLAH BLAH I AM TALKING LOUDLY BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT GREAT ACTORS TALK LOUDLY WHEN APPEARING IN PERIOD PIECES. This movie seemed a lot more realistic.
It's biggest problem is that it is a bit of an ensemble movie, but the director doesn't spend a lot of time focusing on any one character, except for maybe 3 guys.
When someone died in the Dirty Dozen, a great ensemble movie, it was notable, because you got to know each unique character beforehand. In Centurion, when someone died, I thought, "Wait, who was that again? Severus? Jebus? Eh, who cares.".
Still, if you're someone who liked the battle scenes in Braveheart, you will get your fill on a smaller scale here.
