Review of Centurion (2010) by Javier A — 20 Aug 2011
I am a Roman History Whore, I will watch most movies dealing with Roman Pseudo-History, good or not. So when I sat down to watch this movie, I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was enjoyable. It is no masterpiece, and I am tired of this over the top action-violence, which makes the slashing look cartoony, but in its entirety the movie was cool.
The story is nothing new to the genre, and does what these type of movies have done since the first Roman epic was brought to the silver screen. They revel in honor bound military codes and fierce barbarian combat. This being said, the movie still delivers the entertainment.
The acting was ok, with some very stereotypical deliveries and some very pleasant surprises. Fassbender was amazing, I have been fascinated by this young actor in all the films I have seen him in. He is an actor that could be something special. Olga Kurylenko's performance was weak, but was saved because of the simplicity of her character. Again, most of the actors delivered very mundane stereotypical performances yet the movie still advanced and was fun to watch.
The Directing was decent, Neil Marshall does what he is good at, which unfortunately is nothing spectacular. The some of the shots were beautiful, but that was it, the rest of the directing was serviceable at best, but he does nothing daring, nothing psectacular, he gives us presents the movie as directly as possible.
The movie was fun yet was nothing fascinating. I would recommend this movie to any fan of the "Splat pack" and Roman history fans.
