Review of Center Stage (2000) by Sarah Jane S — 16 Nov 2010
Is this movie the greatest movie ever? No. So I really should not have given it a 100 but I have an unhealthy relationship with this movie, which makes it impossible for me not to give it some impossibly high numerical value. Besides I think of the number rating as how much I enjoyed this movie and I certainly enjoyed this movie. So I couldn't give it a more reasonable number even thought I see its faults, and I realize it is not perfect, and it is definitely not for everyone.
Anyways I fell in love with this movie, at the tender age of ten. Now I know if I saw it for the first time today I would not feel the same way I feel about it now. But I do know it holds up amazingly well compared too many of the other movies I loved at that age, like Greese. I love Greese's music, and costumes and colors but my lord is it filled with annoying obnoxious characters, Center Stage however may have worst actors then Greese but is has better, more lovable characters.
Center Stage has lots of dancers in place of actors as even 10 year old me could tell. But the character development and the (I think) well woven side stories kind of make up for the limited acting abilities of some of the actors. Plus Zoë Saldana before she got uber famous.
Also I should probably mention that I memorized the entire film in my pre-teen years, by watching it every night before bed. Unhealthy yes, wired yes, HUGE waste of time, totally (I could have learned whole languages). But damn was it fun.
