Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Ben L — 17 Apr 2010
Being a film buff, I would have to go with not enjoying this film as it is far too obvious where Gervais pulls his influences from. He may not be ashamed but he should be.
Cemetery Junction is the story of three 'lads' who are bored with where they live and want something 'bigger and better'. Hang on. Let's rewind back to 1963 with a little known film Billy Liar. Anyone care to watch it? Please do. Then watch Cemetery Junction and compare. It is exactly the same story. What Gervais and Merchant are hoping is little teenagers who find his jokes funny still to go and see it and think 'black and white is well boring'.
On top of that, if you are a big fan of Gervais (which I am starting now to become less and less), you'll have seen a lot of the 'jokes' in his world famous podcast. Gervais must think we are idiots. He gets a number one podcast (to which I assume this means a lot of people have listened to it - its a safe assumption as it started out free) and then uses those jokes from the podcast in his film projects.
Gervais, people are either already or will start to become tired of your rehash routine and it will be your downfall. Take a couple of years off and work on something really good.
