Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Fraser M — 08 May 2010
Stephen Merchant teams with Ricky Gervais for his second big screen production after disappointing Invention of Lying. Small town shenanigans ensue. The main problem here is a weak screenplay, which I can?t imagine would have ever seen the light of day if it weren?t for Gervais and Merchants backing.
It simply isn?t very interesting, a lot of scenes serve no purpose and not an awful lot actually happens during the film. I expected a departure from Gervais typical awkward/ mean spirited sense of humour, but they do a surprisingly good job of transplanting elements of it into this 70s small town setting.
The ending wraps everything up nicely, yet proves to be completely unsatisfying. This film isn?t bad, its actually very nicely shot, the problem is it just isn?t all that interesting.
