Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Bernard T — 10 Sep 2010
I have taken to watching lesser known British movies on flights, and Cemetery Junction was an uncovered gem - not overwhelming, but touching and real. A coming of age British movie of three young working class youths, set in the 70s, who know that the time for barfights and aimlessness must eventually come to an end, and yet they struggle to know how.
Tom Hughes delivered an outstanding performance as the rebel who is openly ashamed at his dead-end father, only to discover that his father's past that is not to unsimilar to his own. Christian Cooke as the ambitious one, and Jack Doolan as the idiot, complete the wonderful trio of friends who plot a way to break free.
Love interest Felicity Jones played an upper class girl caught in a life of expectation, already pigeonholed at the age of 21 as a loyal supportive wife, being asked to abandon all dreams that she has.
Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and Ricky Gervais - stars in their own right - add class to the movie. Best line of the movie. "Why are you listening to music made by poofs? Go put on some Elton John!".
