Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Shane D — 19 Feb 2011
Upon hearing about Gervais and Merchant re-teaming for this project I was very excited. Then the film came and went in Australia without even garnering a cinematic wide release. Must be bad news I thought.
Finally sitting down to watch it, I still had high hopes. I can't say I was disappointed though, it also wasnt overly brilliant. The chemistry between the cast was notable, the tone of the film was warm, humourous, uplifting, romantic, these were all handled well.
But it just fell short of being memorable, although I'm not sure I could pinpoint what was missing, just that special something. Gervais would do well to find himself a few more of these roles, where he wasn't playing the prick, but an ageing, warm, father as he suited it.
Overall, there was plenty to enjoy about this light hearted attempt at an English coming-of-age piece, but you won't remember much about it once you're done.
