Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Steve S — 23 Aug 2010
*** (out of four).
Directors Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are mildly successful at creating a time and place that feels real. The story is interesting, but could have used more character development to move it to a higher level.
The year is 1973 in the small English village of Cemetery Junction. Christian Cooke is a young man who doesn?t want to work in the factories. Instead he hopes to become a successful Insurance salesman. But, he soon starts to believe that the only way out of his sad life is to leave the town altogether.
There have been so many films about this same subject. This one benefits from a wonderful performance from Emily Watson, and Cooke makes a fine main character. But most everyone else comes up a little short.
