Review of Cellular (2004) by Jack M — 02 Jan 2011
Entertaining and fun, this is supremely stupid material but it benefits from good casting and a pretty fast pace.....
As per usual, the story is useless and does little to support the unusual concept that they have developed. When it becomes clear who the kidnappers are and why they are doing what they are doing, very few surprises are offered. Obvious decisions are made rather than deciding to take a fresh approach.
Where the film does succeed is in its casting. Basinger is absolutely fine but the film belongs to Chris Evans. He has a very likeable presence and energy on screen and he drives the film forward. Chucking in the likes of Statham and Bill Macy also helps a great deal.
Overall this is standard thriller fare but it is a great deal of fiun and most importantly it is never dull....
