Review of Cellular (2004) by Darren C — 21 Mar 2010
*Ring*Ring (I pick up the phone).
Kim Basinger: Save me! Save me! I'm watching CELLULAR!
Me: Relax, Kim! Cellular really isn't that bad of a movie; it's actually pretty decent. But I understand where you're coming from; Cellular can really be annoying often and its 90's style action-comedy makes it feel out-of-date. But don't fear, for anyone who's looking to just kill time, Cellular can be a good pick. (end phone call).
Cellular follows Kim Basinger's character, a hostaged mother who manages to wire a broken phone that can only call one person (who turns out to be a douche bag) Story-wise, the premise is pretty solid and original. However, perhaps the best thing about this movie is its high-energy. From start to finish, it really has you engaged with its variety of action, comedy, drama, and a handful of twists. For starters, the action is solid, as it always is when you have Jason Statham bullying people like it's nobody's business. Then it's wise-cracks and good storytelling really has you entertained throughout.
However, Cellular's biggest problem (and it can be very big) is that it verges on corny a lot of times. The jokes can be funny but a lot of times, but it really just has you confused whether or not to laugh in the high-tension moments (as is the problem of most action-comedies) Then the acting and characterization can really get very thin, also.
Yet, with all that said, I was still entertained. It really didn't suck as much as it could have and despite its 90's style, it really isn't as bad as a lot of modern loud-action crap, maybe even better. Looking at it, you can probably say Cellular can be as good as Speed (at best) yet is only a phone call away from Speed 2 (at worst).
