Review of Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012) by Zack F — 23 Sep 2012
A staggering work of near genius, this perfectly played indie puts forward an honest and fancy foot in a well worn genre. Here, however, the material feels fresh and startlingly real. What starts out as a quirky romantic comedy actually turns into a Hard Knock divorce dramedy. Notice the word 'dramedy,' not drama. What powers the consistently witty goings-on is the intelligent script and A-grade performances that never pander strictly to the funny bone. Rather, it all presents a whip-smart mix that could've fallen flat in the wrong hands. Not only do the leads have amazing chemistry-their patter rings so true that it hurts anyone who's ever been in and out of love.
In this R-rated comedy, a couple who married young (Jones, Samberg) find themselves separated and navigating the difficult road of remaining friends as their individual lives move on.
Rashida Jones, usually a supporting player in ensembles such as NBC's The Office and Parks and Recreation, proves she's one smart cookie as a headliner. Not only does she turn in one hell of an emotional turn as one half of the titular couple, she's also responsible for the achingly beautiful and deadeye honest screenplay. Comedian Andy Samberg fills out the other half of this couple but here his instincts are dead-on serious. And his turn works...really well. We're talking Independent Spirit Award worthy talent here. Will Celeste and Jesse speak for modern love Forever? Maybe, maybe not--but this indie gem only has to make it to awards season to make a lasting impression.
Bottom line: Forever yours.
