Review of Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012) by Gil S — 21 Jul 2013
It is now official. Andy Samberg is now an "actor". With his rein over Lonely Island and various dimwitted comedies, I thought he would turn out to be the next Adam Sandler, but I don't know. Hopefully, this was his breakthrough.
Celeste and Jesse Forever was a fine film. It was heartfelt when it had to be and it was somber when it had to be, never going into melodrama territory. This was probably thanks to the performances. While it never really tread new trails in the romantic comedy genre, the performances were enough to keep you invested with the characters and more importantly, watching the movie and not being overwhelmed by cliche. I'm not saying that CJF was cliched. It brought its own quirks to the genre too, but it still moved through the normal ark.
This is not a perfect movie, that's for sure. But I will go out and say that it is a good one. It brought enough new material and great performances to keep my attention. It did drag a bit at times, but not enough to take me out of the movie. Overall, I liked Celeste and Jesse Forever and hopefully Samberg will take advantage of this breakthrough.
