Review of Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012) by Abdelrahman M — 17 Apr 2013
I popped this BluRay disc in really hoping to like it but came away dramatically underwhelmed. This is probably owes largely to the fact that I feel like I've seen all of this before and done with much more power.
In some ways there seems to be a large disconnect between the stylish visual direction and relatively routine screenplay. Director Lee Toland Krieger has a great eye for composition and has put together some really quite attractive shots but it all feels a little self-important when paired with the more "normal" storyline. To me the visual style was almost a distraction constantly reminding the audience that the movie was being directed rather than letting me get lost in it, which is what needed to happen.
Rashida Jones is fantastic though and I look forward to seeing her on screen more often.
