Review of Cedar Rapids (2011) by Harry L — 08 Sep 2012
Cedar Rapids is a workplace comedy with a lot of heart. Ed Helms has the perfect blend of innocence and idealism in the lead role as Tim, a small town insurance man who is sent to represent his firm at a large conference in the "big city.
" It plays like the first day at a new school for Tim, who must navigate the cliques and determine which social circle will best reflect him and his dreams for moving up in the world. John C. Reilly and Anne Heche play two conference veteran ne'er-do-wells who may or may not derail Tim's straight-laced lifestyle.
But what makes the movie work, aside from these performances and the humour, is the way in which it does not make a mockery of these more unrefined characters. Rather, Tim's arc and the relationships he makes is something of a down-home corporate America bildungsroman in which the hero navigates the genteel facade of the adult world and the fools are given their moments to shine.
