Review of CBGB (2013) by Manny C — 08 Dec 2013
Talk about tacky. Alan Rickman is all shambles and overacting as Hilly Kristal, the owner of the Bowery dive bar that became a punk rock legend CBGB. Much of the film is devoted to Krista's offbeat style.
Far too much. And while it's fun to see actors like Rupert Grint portray folks like Cheetah Chrome (in a pretty terrific portrayal btw) it's a bit of a bummer watching Malin Ackerman 'deliver' a peformance as the iconic Debbie Harry.
It's not happening. CBGB is all tv-movie surface. There's nary a hint of the exciting danger that came from the club that gave start to the Ramones, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Blondie, Talking Head and Television among others.
Snooze.
