Unfortunately I saw the 2D version of this but it was still absolutely stunning. Stunning enough to convince me it would be even more amazing in 3D. At the beginning of the film Herzog sort of apologises for the presence of the camera crew on screen and attributes it to the tightness of space in the cave and the restrictions they were working under.

However, as simple and basic as this documentary seems the subject matter is so amazing Herzog almost need do nothing more than present it. He goes further though, he's interested in what made the people that used this cave tick.

He's not constrained by academic impartiality so can pose questions to the archaeologists and scientists that momentarily flummox them, like "What did they dream about?" Through examination of the cave art and interviews with the people working on the Chauvet cave project he presents a fascinating and wonderful picture of the people who came to these caves that made me wonder how little we've changed in 30 to 40 thousand years.
