Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Ray D — 04 Apr 2011
Art is the subject of Werner Herzogs documentary and in tackling it he somehow creates a new medium by which we can see the effect that looking at mankind's oldest surviving paintings have on their viewers.
Herzogs paints board outlines of some very interesting characters. A perfumer now turned Cave Sniffer who uses his sense of smell to search for undiscovered caves.
Is he motivated by fame, money or knowledge?.
The use of hand held cameras to produce a 3D effect that highlights the artists consideration of the shape of the rocks that they painted on is truly ground breaking.
And what of the cave painters themselves ?. The documentary makers are not so arrogant as to try and explain their motivation, but instead concentrate on modern humans reaction to their work.
You will never see these paintings, so go watch this film.
