Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Danielle W — 16 May 2011
Powerful, powerful subject matter. I had this acute sense of the witnessing the sublime throughout, especially during the tracking sequences panning across the walls. The archaeologists that Herzog interviews present the act of mark-making as a precious and unique thread of human evolution, thought, and communication.
In the case of Chauvex, this is a conversation with an echo that spans 30 thousand years. They point to the combined works of art found there as reaching us in a way that no other form of creative process (spoken/written word or music, etc.
) has (or can) up to this point. I'm still processing how surreal it is to know that the work is as old as it is but to experience what looks so fresh and modern. Really moving. Go see this please! =).
