Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Frank D — 04 Jun 2011
This isn't Herzog's best. I love his documentaries, so maybe my expectations were too high. I have 3 main gripes: 1. The 3-d at times is really bad. At times it's awesome, though, and I understand why he uses 3-d to help you get a real feel for the contours of the cave. When it is good.
You really feel like you're up close looking at the amazing paintings. 2. The movie kind of seems slapped together, like a term paper that you've put off until the last minute and then dashed off without getting all your reference material sorted out. Some of the people he interviews aren't experts, they're just interesting people. 3. Herzog's commentary; I'm afraid he's becoming a parody of himself, weaving his own views and philosophy into the film, asking scientists about the human soul and the like.
So, it's good, just not great like a lot of his work.
