Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Forrest K — 04 Jun 2011
Perhaps the most culturally significant film of all time, and certainly the only film to truly justify 3D as a medium. Herzog uses the technology to show the texture and depth of what may be man's first foray into art - and it's a beautiful gift, as only a handful of people are ever allowed into the caves.
(Indeed, they may be shut off forever eventually, to prevent contamination.) Simply as a document of humanity's origins, the film is undeniably moving, but Herzog brings his unique perspective to their portrayal, using art as a lens back upon ourselves, and humanity's future.
In trademark Herzog fashion, his observations are sometimes poignant, sometimes entirely batshit, which makes the film all the more enjoyable. 3D still gives me headaches, but it's worth it to have the opportunity to explore these forgotten dreams.
