Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Josepi K — 01 Aug 2011
Today many directors use 3D for the sake of using 3D. Cave of Forgotten Dreams exemplifies how the cinematic experience can be complimented and expanded with this technological feature.
I had a personal connection to this film having visited the Lascaux cave (or at least its exact replica), the more famous and younger prehistoric cave in France. This film increased my appreciation of the technological knowledge of the prehistoric artists and ability to articulate via paintings. In addition this film highlighted the artistry involved in the paintings. One of the main ideas highlighted in this film is that the archaeologists can only recreate an impression of the past, but can never truly know the full extent of what existed in the past. This is the case with film and other historical documents or journalism for that matter.
Herzog films can be a hit or miss in my book, but this one is a definite hit. It is the best Herzog film I have seen since GRIZZLY MAN.
