Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Manny C — 09 Oct 2011
It's an anthropologist's dream film. For the rest of us, it's absolutely mesmerizing to immerse yourself into the Chauvet caves. There's so much to know and so much to see. There's one scene with one of the anthropologists shows us how the Paleolithic people hunted, and Herzog persuades one of them to talk about his past as a circus performer.
It isn't as enchanting or as amazing as Encounters at the End of the World or Grizzly Man, but he tells a good story and his shots are fantastic. All in all, it's a well done documentary, but it would have been better if he had pursued the stranger aspects of the film (circus performing, more albino alligators, etc).
Some viewers may find the interviews with the experts to be a bit tedious, but I thought it was quite enlightening. The allegory with the albino alligators in the postscript is the best.
