Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Chris J — 01 Nov 2011
A fascinating documentary which Herzog wisely films straight with very little of his usual cheeky documentary fictions (apart from a ridiculously irrelevant footnote about albino crocodiles) and for the most part lets the ancient cave paintings and alien cave landscapes speak for themselves to the sounds of Reisniger's ethereal score.
True to his nature Herzog does find some colourful characters to interview and probes more unusual questions from them. Again, perhaps wisely, there is no speculation about the "whys" behind the paintings, only a passionate documentation of the paintings and markings and the recognisable humanity seen across an overwhelming abyss of time.
