Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Steve A — 24 Dec 2011
The cave itself, the artwork therein, and the awe-inspiring mystique of its creators is the draw of this film, and quite a draw, as is the outdoor scenery surrounding the cave. The cinematography captures it well, it is a beautiful movie to look at.
I found Herzog's delivery heavy-handed and positively annoying at times. This is one subject from which I strongly feel the filmmaker has to recede in presenting and Herzog does NOT do this. There are about 10 seconds near the end where, mercifully, Herzog turns the volume down on the score and I thought "Yes! Shut up! Let us just LOOK!," but the score eventually returns in full.
The music itself is magnificent and more or less congruous with the mood of observing the cave, and to a limited degree even wholly appropriate, but Herzog almost NEVER turns it off. Nearly all of us will never be allowed into the cave to see it ourselves, because our presence would overwhelm the cave.
Here we get the cave, with Herzog's presence overwhelming it.
