Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by William H — 25 Jan 2012
I love Werner Herzog. This wasn't one of his best films. I'd notch it below Encounters at the End of the World and above The White Diamond. The power of the film is that it basically forces you to meditate for 90 minutes on what the hell being a human being 30k years ago was like, on what art would have meant to you, on what art does mean to you, and on how amazing it is to see that those people could create depictions of their world that are compelling, even today, that they dd all this while spearing cave bears and woolly rhinos and avoiding lions.
So, it's almost like Melancholia or Tree of Life in that the power of the film comes from the implied question or questions it forces on you from the very first minute. And of the three, Melancholia and Tree of Life carried much more power to me and were much more beautiful.
I did not see Cave in 3D.
