Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by J.b. R — 07 Apr 2012
Incredibly compelling story of this ancient cave augmented by Herzog's usual demented narration. He finds ways to make connections in the material that few would and somehow ties the underlying meaning to the art of filmmaking itself.
The film is limited in its ability to be cinematic (due to the constraints of the cave) so Herzoh chose to instead use 3-D and conventional cameras to highlight the drawings in the best way he could. I think his approach is brilliant but it does restrict the film from being more visually grand in a sense and therefore when viewed in context of Herzog's other documentary masterpieces, it seems more loose and less precise.
Never the less, a fascinating film and a truly remarkable look at a piece of history few have ever gotten to see.
