Review of Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) by Rob L — 03 Jun 2012
A curiosity this in that it's an interesting exercise to imagine what one's reaction would be were Werner Herzog not the narrator. For sure, it's a fascinating portrait of the oldest cave paintings known to man, a full 6,000 years older than those at Lascaux, but would this merely be a superior telly documentary without the enthusiastic and occasionally rather cheeky voiceover from the German?
The narration attempts to move beyond the caves themselves and explores how people will have lived 23,000 years ago - at one point, an odd cove in full reindeer skin costume tells us about life in the Ice Age (not as cold as a Saturday afternoon at Boundary Park I'd wager). One can imagine schoolkids sniggering on being treated to a common room showing - but it's a fine documentary nonetheless.
