Review of Catwoman (2004) by Brad J — 07 May 2011
Halle Berry seems to be channeling Eartha Kitt's portrayal of the character and watching her is a lot of fun. The costume she wears looks ridiculous but then again so is the character. The core concept is so silly that you wish the filmmakers would have exploited its potential for campy humor.
Unfortunately, they don't. This film is unwisely played as serious with only a few goofy touches that suggest how much fun this could have been. The director Pitof shouldn't bother helming feature films.
His direction is disappointingly bland and he doesn't do enough with this material. There's no vision. It looks and feels like a pilot episode of a dramatic TV series rather than a feature film.
It's the kind of series that would only air for a few episodes and then get axed from the lineup. What I do like about Catwoman is the romance between Benjamin Bratt and Halle Berry. They ignite the screen with their chemistry in such a way that I was actually looking forward to the moments when they would share the screen again.
They should work together in a better film.
