Review of Catfish (2010) by Jean-Francois V — 06 May 2011
"Catfish" is a documentary about a dance photographer who meets a gifted eight-year old artist on Facebook, falls in love with her very attractive sister, begins to have his doubts about them, and decides to pay them a visit in the flesh.
I found this film totally engrossing from start to finish. Told through video interviews and reporting, candid camera, web pages, phone calls and Google Earth animations, it is the fascinating journey of a young man seduced by one family, and willing to discover who he has really been dealing with for months.
There is not much one can say about the film without spoiling it. I personally found the experience well worth it, though I will not reveal whether it was disturbing, cautionary, sobering or heartwarming: you ought to have as little prior knowledge as its protagonist himself before you click the catfish icon.
