Review of Catfish (2010) by Sophie . — 29 Sep 2011
In this day and age everyone has a Facebook which has made everyone more open to share and communicating online rather than face to face. So a different kind of communication has taken place that is a bit more pretty and shiny than in person. Under this shine is an unsettling truth to human society that needs to be addressed in all of us which is why this is a must see. The Social Network was interesting and all but Catfish opens your eyes to our surroundings which everyone can have a real opinion on.
People are saying this isn't a real doco and all or half of it is fake. I can see how it looks this way because its so simple and could be an everyday event. But the way it was captured is so real, how Nev reacts to certain situations would be a study of human emotion and in my view would probably not have been able to be continued through the whole film. Thats how I see it anyway. If it is fake it still doesn't matter because the realness in the preformance is the realness in everyday life so to me it is the same thing.
Nev is hugely likeable and I am sure his brother realized this early on, it helps you feel comfortable with the subjects because they are upfront and open about the situation. This is the real gem about the film, its captured perfectly and edited with a nice flow the team of three are all complete naturals.
Go see this if you havent and don't read anything more about it! I didn't know one thing about it and though its predicable you still wonder how you would handle it yourself and keep watching.
