Review of Catfish (2010) by Brandon V — 27 Nov 2011
Going in expecting the unexpected, I was sorely let down as I know why the tagline is "don't tell anyone what its about" because if people like me do it wont make any money at the box office when released.
The movie truly isn't about anything more than a guy who starts an online relationship with a young girl who he sends his photography work to. She starts to mail him paintings of his work back. Over the course of this, he meets her mom, father, brothers and older sister, and starts a pseudo intimate relationship with the older sister.
Long story short we all the know from the get go that the family and this situation is foolishness, so the guy begins to document the entire story. I was sorely let down as because when things started to unravel I expected craziness to ensue.
I got none of that :-/ While it is a mildly interesting story at the start, it quicky delves into boredom. Its 2010. We are all aware of the pitfalls of online dating and the deception behind social networking sites.
I guess it is suspenseful, but I can't help feeling that this type of material would have been more appropriate back in the mid-90s, alas I guess some people still fall for the okey doke. Please wait for this movie to come on basic cable if interested, save your hard earned cash.
