Review of Catfish (2010) by Mike D — 21 Jan 2012
'Catfish' is a sad commentary on what life for many has become in this age of digital totalitarianism. What promises to be a sly, creative mockumentary that investigates the relationships cultivated on Facebook turns out to be a majorly mis-marketed letdown.
It is interesting to follow Nev Schulman build friendships with the so-called "Facebook Family", especially how he begins to pick up on hints that all may not be as it seems. There comes a point in the film when it looks like the plot could divulge into a thrilling, head-for-the-hills style chase, which would actually fit the storyline well in this instance, but instead it never really reaches a climax.
Instead, the realistic "twist" is not very exciting, and drags on a little too long in a dreary, somber collection of scenes. 'Catfish' definitely had a lot going for it. Too bad it had to drown in its own pond.
