Review of Catch and Release (2006) by Mara A — 09 Jan 2012
From beginning to end, this was a very quirky, off-beat movie. It definitely falls into the "chick flick" category, though I think there's enough gratuitous sex to please guys as well. It always amazes me how easily people fall in love in the movies. Sleep together a few times, and suddenly it's "love.".
I felt lukewarm about this movie while watching it, though the storyline *was* very intriguing. It's not really a LOVE story, but a LIFE story, and how love and sex fit into that. Towards the end I thought it would end up being one of those "It was just OK" movies and yet...several days after seeing it, I found myself thinking of the characters, why they made the choices they did in the film, almost as if they were real people.".
And that I think is the movie's charm. It's written the way real people are, how they act, how they inter-relate, how they love. The byline of the movie is "Life is messy. Love is messier." Not only is that very true, it didn't really click for me that's what it was all about until a few days after the movie. Towards the end of it I found myself thinking "Why is she doing that?" It didn't end the way I wanted it to. Had the characters only asked ME, I could have chosen better for them! But as with real life, we can't see the big picture, only our own view of it.
It wasn't in the "great epic films of all times" category, but then again, it wasn't meant to be. It's just a cute little film, about love, life, timing, sex and fate. Timing. I think that's what love comes down to...is timing.
