Review of Catch a Fire (2006) by Jon C — 18 Feb 2007
Boring and hard to get through. The weakest of the three films set in Africa released in 2006 (the other two being the good Blood Diamond and the great Last King of Scotland). They have a bad voiceover that is used to make the disjointed parts of the story connect better.
The movie feels like an hour's been cut out of it (but as far as I know, nothing was cut)...it jumps around and skips over some of the most important parts of the story which makes no sense. It'll be in the middle of a big sequence and then it'll suddenly jump forward in time and skip over the climax.
The most interesting stuff seems to happen offscreen. Horrific editing it seems unless that's all the footage the editor had to work with. But the last big sequence especially is terrible and we have zero involvement in the story.
The characters act inconsistently (why does Robbins' character ignore Patrick's statement about the woman he goes to see, saying "Nice try, Patrick", especially when he's so bent on "the truth" in other sequences (he seems to alternate between conflicted bad guy and just plain evil).
How the fuck does Robbins know the mileage of the car from the one night?) In any case, this is a definite movie to avoid.
