Review of Catch-22 (1970) by Stephen C — 02 Jan 2008
This was always going to be a difficult book to adapt but Credit to Mike Nichols and Buck Henry they do a great job .
Alan Arkin is wonderful as Yossarian a Pilot who will do literally anything to get out of fighting.
Nichols fills the film with agreat cast Including Orson Welles ,Jon Voight and Martin Balsam.
The comic effect is pretty good but there are some truly shocking moments along the way (The Death of Hungry Joe being the most notable).
Greeted with indifference on it intial realease this has beome a cult classic thanks to a younger generation of directors Such as Steven Soderberg giving it high praise.
I happen to think along with Silkwood and Virginia Wolf its one of Nichols best films.
