Review of Cat People (1942) by Cynthia G — 15 May 2007
Directed by Jacques Tourneur.
Starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Tom Conway, Jane Randolph, Jack Holt.
Producer Val LewtonÕs most famous B-movie product (ÒI Walked with a ZombieÓ also directed by Tourneur is his best and most artistic, this is however, the more memorable), is the tale of a woman who inherited a curse that transforms her physically into a murderous feline preying on those not strong enough to resist her charm and gaze. ÒCat PeopleÕsÓ scare tactics are delivered by shadows and sound executed so eerily, no cat mangling necessary here. TourneurÕs movies are commanded by great lighting (he also directed ÒOut of the PastÓ) put to the extreme, it has a life of its own. ÒCat PeopleÓ was probably very scary during its time, now its but a curious piece but the idea itself is so sexually exploitive that it was remade.
Best Scene: Pool terror.
QUOTE: ÒI love silence. I love loneliness. They are in me.Ó.
