Review of Cat People (1942) by Vince F — 17 Jun 2008
Considering the fact that this was made in 1942, it still is quite the classic that doesn't let it's datedness get in the way of it's intriguing sensibilities.
Beautiful, lusty, mysterious, cute as a button Irenea is new in New York City, and is lonely and in need of a friend. She meets Oliver, and things click instantly, Oliver is in awe of Irenea ( I would be too), there's just something steamy and sensual about her.Offbeat, quirky, an unique outsider really. Her voice. Her sense of style. Her facial expressions. All appealing aspects.
Irenea is a cat person though, and when aroused, she may or may not turn into a pissed off panther that needs to kill to return to her normal state. Nothing seems remotely as interesting for a 40ies low budget dish.
There's no nudity, gore, and everything seems more hinted at. Unseen threats, with psychological undertones. Loved it so much. Sexy movie. Does it have Sex appeal? Yeah, I'd think so.
The dialog contains lines that hint at the bizarre and the erotic. Oliver tells Irena her perfume is "warm and living." Irena says the roars of the big cats in the nearby zoo is "natural and soothing." She finds the dark "friendly.".
I loved the scenes where Alice is getting stalked, or when she is swimming and sees the cat shadow around the edges of the pool.
The remake is just as good too, love this concept. I want to date a cat person.
