Review of Cat People (1942) by Paul J — 04 Oct 2010
This original Val Lewton production has Tourneur using his innovative low-budget technique. Plenty of shadows and atmosphere with this less is more approach. It's no masterpiece but for '42, the subtext was very sexual and way ahead of its time.
Creepy stuff. Schrader remade it later in the 80s with more gore and nudity. The original has more charm. (But the remake features a Bowie song!).
